We’ve featured a ton of late-70’s Technics materials here at PS dot com, but I think this is the first of their period speakers we’ve described…  and wow these things are unusual.  The woofer and midrange use rigid flat diaphragms, and the tweeter is a “Leaf” design; check the download for deets on that.  Anyone ever listen to these?  Thoughts?

I owned a later model 3-way pair a few years back. I bought them used from a hi-fi buddy. Nice sounding speakers for mid-field studio monitoring. The woofer went funny, and couldn’t be replaced…can’t find the parts anymore I suppose. Funny, the Alesis Monitor Two’s reminded me of the sound of those Technics. Cheers.

I own and still use these speakers. They are fabulous. The honeycomb series from Technics are the most uncolored I have tested and used in recording studio settings as well. This models tweeter is reputed to be 6db down at 120kHz which is way above any humans hearing. It showed that in the upper hearing range of 20khz that the controlled rolloff was smooth. I have found the stereo sound stage to be very accurate and even produce spatial sound beyond the extreme positioning of the speakers. The tight extended bass is a delight soundwise on modern movies. Who needs a subwoofer and Surround sound! Why was these speakers not as popular as others? They didnt have colored harmoncs, cone cavity distortions and screaming tops. They were also more costly to produce. Placed alongside others in a show room, they didnt stand a chance over other manufacturers models. Its funny how the ear can easily be fooled on something with more tops being more Hi Fi.

I have these speakers as well, still use them daily. Fully agree with you on the sound quality. I won’t sell them ever.

Hi Lon from NZ have owned a set of SB10 since 1981 and use them regularly along with a mission turntable and Sure V15 type 1V cartridge on a Technics mini system. Great for the leftovers of my record collection, and a few late arrivals.

I have the SB-7 speakers. I loved the sound of them with my huge old Kenwood receiver, but it died recently and I replaced it with a new smaller stereo system that came with a set of very small speakers. I hooked mine up to it instead but the sound isn’t as full. Do I need to change the settings on the speakers? I never messed with them and don’t know anything about that. They have adjustments for midrange and tweeter.

I purchased the complete system new in the 80’s.
I still have it complete with the SB-10 and speaker stands. Amp could use volume control cleaned but, speakers work like new!

Have ha pair of SB 7.
Took the crossover apart, new capacitors and airgap inductors.
Nice sound. Very neutral 🙂
