Presto Recording Corp was a pioneer of coated-disc ‘Instantaneous Recording.’ From 1933 through the end of WWII, Presto was the US leader in providing high-quality recording equipment to broadcasters, schools, studios, and government. There is a detailed history of the Presto Corp provided at this website, so no need to re-tread those waters. Basically, what Presto offered was a way to make good-sounding LP and 78 recordings that could be played back instantly on any home turntable. Unlike earlier commercial recording technologies, there was no intermediate submaster required. Presto was able to do this by having designed an aluminum (later, glass) disc that was coated with a special cellulose-based compound (featuring 51 ingredients!).
On a more basic user-level: you could always record-over a piece of magnetic tape; but cutting into a lacquer-coated disc (at $16/unit in today’s money) was a commitment.
Looking through this catalog, the most fascinating aspect is the large range of mechanical devices and accessories recommended to insure the fidelity of the audio. Nowadays almost all audio control happens electronically; once the room is treated and the microphone carefully placed, our work as recording engineers leaves the realm of physical manipulation and enters a world of electronic control. In the era of analog disc recording, though, a careful recording engineer needed blowers…
UDPATE:
Thank-you to reader EL for sending us the schem to the Presto 40-A. Here ’tis as a download: PRESTO Type 40-A preamp schematic
…And here as well:
This must be a slightly later version of the 40-A, as the 2nd tube is a 6SJ7, which is a variant of the 6J7 that has the input grid connection in the base rather than on the top. Other things to note: the input transformer spec’d is an ‘LS-10,’ which I can only assume means the UTC LS-10… circuit-wise, we have the first 6J7 connected in pentode, coupled by a .1uf cap to the 2nd 6SJ7 stage, this time wired in Triode in order to more easily drive the output transformer. A ’50M’ resistor (or as we know them, 50K ohms) provides negative feedback from stage 2 to stage one. Thinking that this circuit could be nice as the back end to a 3-stage pre, maybe with a something low-gain like a 76 or 6J5 on the front end with a volume pot following.

EL also provided some images of his particular 40A units… check ’em out…

UPDATE: a friend has alerted us to The 78 project, a series of new recordings of notable musicians made using just a Shure 51 mic and a Presto disc recorder. They sound great, and in the videos you can hear both the modern production-sound of the session via the camera audio-track and the actual 78 playback. Very interesting contrast…

Hi!
I'm very glad to find your site.
I'm a musician, and a recordist.
I have two of the Presto Type 40-A pre-amplifiers (with parts missing) that I'm looking at restoring. There's not much info online, but this adds a significant something to the resources available. Thanks for posting!
I managed to track down a circuit diagram for this unit.
Send me your email and I'll forward it on.
My units are missing the input transformers, which were obviously sold on for profit, but I found some miniature UTC replacements in the P-2 model, which offers equivalent specification in a smaller, less glamourous package.
One unit has the Kenyon P400 output transformer in place, whilst the other is missing, unfortunately.
I'm looking forward to trying them out one day!
hi evan. yes please email me those schematics... chris at preservationsound dot com. thanks! c.
I have a Presto 64-A Transcription Turntable listed on eBay now. And what a great piece machinery it is. The motors in this baby are unbelievable. Here's the link if anyone would like to check it out.

I've got a box , no machine unfortunatly, that I'm trying to date. The metal tag on the lid says , Signal Corp, U.S. Army , Box 318 , order no. 2896PH-52 , Presto Recording Corp. Made of wood dovetailed w/ metal corners on top & bottom. Could this date to WWII , Korea , or possibly later?
I don't know about the box, but I do know that at least one presto disk was used to record interviews in Japan. I bought the disk at a thrift store, and uploaded the audio to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86ODqkfLU3U&index=2&list=PL7S37hqx3dovRdBFd01GsSIbqa6NAihrJ if you're interested.
I AM INTERESTED IN ANY CATALOG OR PARTS RELATED TO PRESTO RECORDER 6N AND A93 RECORDING AMPLIFIER THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP
I just came across your website. I love it, and I do have a Presto Model "C" disc recorder with its companion Presto Model 85 recording amplifier and also the Model 40-A microphone-pre-amplifier. Certainly gives me the modification to get these units working. I would need the schematic for the Presto 40-A microphone-pre-amplifier.
Thanks for taking the time to post your website. I hope to visit it often.
Best regards, Gaylord Ewing
hi gaylord. the 40A schematic is indeed posted in this very post. see above. c.
I'll be keen to hear how the restoration project goes!
Gaylord Ewing,
Glad someone out there has the complete PRESTO 40 preamp unit.
- and can make use of the schematic I posted in!
I have two of these units, but many parts missing, unfortunately.
Let us know how you go with the restoration!?
We have a couple of Presto 85 amplifiers we would like to bring to working order again.
Does anyone have a schematic of these?
Tnx,
Thanks for the mention, Chris! It's so exciting for all of us at The 78 Project to see all of this enthusiasm for Presto history and restoration.
Also, if anyone with a Presto is looking for tubes, we have a fantastic tube guy in Brooklyn called Leeds Radio: http://www.leedsradio.com/
I would like to find if anyone has any info on some blank discs I have. They have been in the basement since I bought my house 30 years ago. Time to start getting rid of some things.
16 inch type 716A stock # 6C15-2. They are still in original package.
Any Value?
Steve
