Now for some really obscure shit

Today at PS dot con: some interesting+bizarro seventies pro audio kit that caught my eye; i can find little to no reference to any of this stuff online.  Anyone?

Above: The ARRAY Co. model 12 studio monitor of 1972, which SEEMS similar in principle to the classic BOSE 901, except that…  all of the twelve drivers in the ARRAY fire forward.  I can’t imagine what these must have sounded like but i would love to know!

SoundGenesis_TascamLimiters_1975And, at left: Sound Genesis Corp, which was primarily a retail operation, AFAICT, offered these buss (i am guessing?) limiters as aftermarket add-ons for the early Tascam mixing consoles!  Very interesting.  Did any one else make similar drop-in aftermarket strips for Tascam boards?  Circa 1975.

The “TOY CHEST” Limiter looks as though it may have been made by the same guys that make the “Pandora LM-401” & “402” universal limiters. They’re pretty cool sounding, though they are quite low output. They sound great inline with hifi gear, though are really, very, low output for modern production use. I still do use my LM-401 for stuff at mixdown though, quiet or not.

The Array 12 sounded, well, L O U D. But harsh overall, with a really thumping one-note bass. Jazz music sounded like a table radio turned up too loud. Orchestral music was unbearable. Made you yearn for an old Voice of Music recored changer by comparison.

But put on a 45-rpm record of Stayin’ Alive, or any other disco tune and they came alive. One of the best dance & disco boxes of the day.
