Check out this crazy fkkn tape deck

Download the 6pp catalog for the Eumig FL-1000 cassette deck:

Eumig was apparently primarily a film-camera/projector maker, ok, but that doesn’t explain why the FL1000 was designed to be controlled by a Commodore Pet or Apple 2. Actually, you could apparently control 3 of the goddamn things at once.   I wonder if there is a single one of these things left working on the planet today.

  • A guy in Decatur, Illinois had a company called Systemation that sold these and the Commedore computer to radio stations in order to automate programming. He sold quite a few throughout the midwest.

    • I worked for that guy in Decatur. His great-grandfather was a snake oil/medicine show huckster in the old west. Systemation Automation for radio was of the same quality.

    • His name was Steve Bellinger (I think). I toured the station when we were looking for an automation system for overnights on our AM station. It was impressive to see, and actually sounded very good. But we opted not to go that route.

  • I have one that still works great! Super-fast rewind and accurate meter due to the opto-electronic capstan, first of its kind apparently. I had a coffeehouse back in the 90's with live music performances a few nights per week and often recorded with it direct via a line out from mixer. Several artists transferred these recordings to digital and released the performances on CDs and said the sound quality was so good that there was very little post-production required.

The chip in these units allowed daisy chaining up to 16 of these together to be controlled with a computer. Eumig was going after the radio/tv markets but went bankrupt in 1982 and sold everything to other companies. These units were priced at $1550 in 1980 dollars, approx $4500 today. If you open one up and look inside, you can see why as they used all top-notch components, caps, connectors, etc.

  • Anyone repairing these units?
I have 1 that needs a gear ( what the guy I got it from said) but I am not sure he knew what he was diagnosing

I have another working unit and I love it
