While not a great microphone on the level of a good vintage RCA or Beyer, the MXL sounds surprisingly good when mod’d with an aftermarket transformer. We ran an article on this easy+inexpensive process some years ago, and it has proven to be one of the most popular articles on PreservationSound.

Chris,
Great article, which I stumbled across your R40 project while looking for information on my recently acquired R40. I figure it sounded OK stock, but I knew it could be better.
After reading this post, I shot over to Edcor and purchased a RMX-1 transformer. I have performed this modification on a Nady RSM-4 a few years back (along with a ribbon adjustment), and the different was outstanding!
Finding your website also sparked my interest into building audio projects again. Thanks for the inspiration!
