The Akai and Roberts reel-to-reels have circuitry that is largely derivative of the American Ampex machines of the same period, combining an EF86 front end with triode drivers. I wanted to capture as much of the vibe of these classic prosumer machines but with a feature set and performance that would make the units suitable for use in a modern production environment.
