WDR Cologne Electronic Music Studio 1956

Download an 8pp article from HIGH FIDELITY magazine, October 1956, on the subject of the WDR Cologne Electronic Music studio; composer-in-residence Karl Stockhausen.  Author is Allen Forte.

DOWNLOAD: Forte_ElectronicMusic_WDR_Cologne_1956

This piece provides a fascinating look into the tools and techniques
used at one of the earliest dedicated electronic-music-production facilities in the world.  Instruments discussed include the Bode-Melochord and the Monochord.  We also learn in the article that apparently John Cage had to sell some of his Thirteen Radios to purchase Eight Tape Recorders.  In related news, I heard that you and your band sold your guitars and bought turntables; I  hear that you and your band sold your turntables and bought guitars.  (another connection – he was apparently there at the first CAN show – IN COLOGNE – coincidence?) And the great circle of life continues.

Reeves Sound Studio Television Operations circa 1962

Courtesy Tom and John Fine is this fascinating 14pp 1962 article on the then-state-of-the-art television operations at Reeves Sound Studio.

Download is in two parts due to file size:

Tom Fine had earlier presented us with a history of Reeves Sound Studios NYC; click here to read that 2014 piece.  Today’s scan comes from what appears to be a promotional re-print of an article originally published in Broadcast News magazine.  Tom comments, “Aside from the interesting antique TV and film production facilities and equipment shown, we see a photo of audio engineer Jack Higgins, who made many Riverside jazz records.”

Stereo Vacuum Tube Studio EQ based on 1955 Circuit

Many years ago I posted this schematic which I found in Audio magazine circa 1955:

I forgot all about it, probably because I quickly gave-up on finding dual 250k/500k pots.  PS do com reader Alekos Gavriilidis from Thessaloniki Greece went ahead and built it anyway, using separate pots instead of dual-gang pots , and found this to yield useful results.  Alekos writes:

… i’ve just finished the project (EQ TUBES 6SL7). Im sending you photos of this project. I used 4 tubes 2 in parallel for every channel.  Now the sound is incredible!!!!!!!  P.S. I had a little noise from the filaments so i changed the voltage from AC to DC volt. Soon it will be in a studio”

Here’s his notes on the schematic:

Here’s a quick diary of his build:

…and here’s the layout that Alekos used for the panel:

He also provided plots of the action of the various controls:

Thanks very much for sharing this with us Alekos!  If you’ve had success building one of the circuits that I’ve posted here over the years, please let us know about it… your success might encourage others to do the same.

1981 ADM Custom Film Mixing Console For Glen Glenn Sound

Tom Chrapkiewicz,  former engineer for ADM Technology (Audio Designs and Mfg) sent us some information on this extremely sophisticated console that they designed in 1981 for Glen Glenn Sound.

Tom tells us, ‘above is a scan of a sales photo/document for one of the Consoles we made at ADM circa 1981 for Glen Glenn Sound (later Todd AO) Hollywood.  The application was for Dialogue, Effects and Music production for film.  Countless films in the mid to late 1980s were done on these consoles. This is an early automated, digitally controlled analog audio console. The mixing control was via multiple 6502 microprocessors – one per each of the 65 inputs.  These multiple microprocessors were networked together to a (I believe 8080/CP/M system.  The analog path was controlled via dbx2001 VCA within each input strip.’

MINDING THE GAP with original score by Halpern and Ruggiero in theaters now

Late last year Nathan Halpern and I scored this excellent film by director Bing Lui and it is now in theaters and streaming online via Hulu. “Minding The Gap” debuted at Sundance this year, winning the ‘Breakthrough Filmmaking Award,’ and it is an exceptionally bold and honest American coming-of-age story. The critical response has been exceptionally strong, with many critics making special note of our score:

“…the music and mood attain a melancholy perfection” (The Wall Street Journal)
“The score by Nathan Halpern and Chris Ruggiero is sparse and beautiful and perfect” (Chicago Sun-Times)
“an odyssey… cut to Nathan Halpern and Chris Ruggiero’s achingly beautiful score”  (Vulture)
“… owes its goose-bump-inducing power in part to Nathan Halpern and Chris Ruggiero’s swirling piano score” (Variety)
Watching the men skate during the opening credits sequence, propelled by Nathan Halpern and Chris Ruggiero’s wistful piano score, the act of skating transforms into a liberating art form” (Forbes)

Our original score is available to hear now on Spotify, Apple music, and all the other usual digital platforms.
